Search / Export request

jcdoss   December 10th, 2010 1:42p.m.

I humbly request two features.

Please expand the search function, such that if I search My Words for a single character, then results will be returned with all words containing that character.

Second, please make it so that users can export only their starred words.

Thanks!

those are two really great ideas

nick   December 13th, 2010 5:33p.m.

We have planned to do these; good calls.

patstam   December 17th, 2010 11:33p.m.

I'd like to add that it would be really helpful to be able to search for meanings as well as writings, so I could type "write" instead of かく.

Automatic romaji -> kana conversion would hurt either :)

Love what you've done so far, keep up the good work!

Will we also be able to search by definition? Would have come in handy the other day. (Ah, what patstam above me said. My eyes glaze over at Japanese...).

nick   December 19th, 2010 3:01p.m.

Would it be helpful to search by just one word in a definition? That might be doable, but multiple word search would be tough. Let me know how useful that limited definition search would be.

For romaji -> kana, I can see the usefulness, but perhaps I can ask whether the Japanese IME might be even more useful? You get to avoid romaji and practice real Japanese. Unless I'm misunderstanding the use case?

patstam   December 21st, 2010 5:05a.m.

One word would probably be fine for most searches, and would certainly be an improvement.

As for the romaji -> kana thing, the only reason I mention this is because I'm used to using jisho.org which does this conversion for you. Its really just a minor convenience of not needing to switch input modes for short chunks of Japanese characters.

As with patstam. Another thing is if I search for a character, might it be possible for words to appear that contain that character? Currently just the individual character shows.

We've put the single-word definition search on the list for later; will probably be a while, but we'll get to it. The romaji -> kana we decided not to do.

We are planning on hooking up the search to grab the containing words for a searched character, too, perhaps sometime in January. That'll definitely come in handy.
