Apple magic trackpad - anybody tried it?

Neil   December 3rd, 2010 5:42a.m.

Following on from this thread: http://www.skritter.com/forum/topic?id=20700828 it seems that the tablet/handwriting mode is built into the new big 'magic' trackpad for desktop macs: http://store.apple.com/us/question/answers/product/MC380LL/A?mco=MTQzMzA4MzI&pqid=QFPHTDPTAPT2YTXC2FYD4DP9KHXH7UFDC

People are saying it's possible to use this device on Windows with bluetooth: http://www.labnol.org/software/apple-magic-trackpad-with-windows/14158/ But I'm guessing the handwriting mode disappears along with the other bells and whistles in the Windows driver - any body got one and can test it out for us?
Might be a good portable input device for the road.

Somebody has also asked the question here: http://store.apple.com/us/question/answers/product/MC380LL/A?mco=MTkyMTc5ODI&pqid=QCHJYPXAD2CFA79AYFYD4DP9KHXH7UFDCwith no luck as yet.

Based on the "magic" trackpad tech thats already on the newer macbooks, it won't function the way you think it will on skritter. You would still need to click down or double tap to drag and hold the mouse pointer.

The Chinese handwriting input on Macs are only made to output a fonted character, not the actual handwriting. For Skritter use, I believe Skritter will have to write their own software to use this multitouch functionality.

Sorry, I was confused.

I downloaded that inklet app and after messing with the settings, it works! (on my mac). I suppose it will work on the magic trackpad, but not sure about a PC. It's slightly buggy. Especially when you stroke hooks. I may just need practice.

But your right, the labnol article makes it seem like the multifunction part is stripped.

xingyang, which Inklet settings did you use? When I tried the demo, I couldn't get it to work worth anything with my finger; the creators said a Pogo would work better.

I don't think you would want to use the magic trackpad on Windows for Skritter.

Inklet Preferences> General >

- Make sure Handwriting recognition is disabled
(If handwriting recognition was previously enabled, you'll have an independent "Ink" setting on OS X, where you will also need to disable handwriting recognition.)

Inklet Preferences> Drawing >

- Switch the current drawing tool to "finger" instead of pogo sketch. (I think this is the core of your problem)

--------
I find that it's jittery when you use your finger. You get a lot of accidental strokes. However, I noticed that if you slightly rest your finger on the track pad, you can hover the cursor to guide your strokes. Applying a bit more pressure will allow you to draw. Finger painting isn't that comfortable.

My pogo sketch should be coming in soon. I'll update once I get it.

I forgot to add; disable any pressure sensitive setting if you are using your finger.

iPhone + pogo stick FTW then

Update: The pogo sketch has me moving at lightning speeds on my mac. I love it.

Hint: I had to mess with settings a lot until it was comfortable for me to use.
