HSK lists

KingWang   April 22nd, 2013 7:54a.m.

Yesterday my HSK 2 list was 100% done - today it's at 33%. Any idea why? Apparently there have been some changes made to the HSK lists, but the listed changes didn't amount to anywhere near the deletion of 100+ words. (My HSK 1 list has also been affected, but not as much.)

本杰明   April 22nd, 2013 11:04a.m.

Yeah and I was wondering... about the words that were removed... I assume they're no longer going to appear in my reviews. So is there an easy way to re-add them?

nick   April 22nd, 2013 11:29a.m.

Evan is updating the HSK lists to the new versions. There aren't very many changes in each list, but because the changes adjust your place in the list to the place where the first word was changed, it may show your progress as being just that far. You still have almost all the words added, but until you can go through and add through the few missing spots in the lists, Skritter may just base your progress on that first substitution spot.

If you want those words that were removed (because they're no longer in the new new HSK standards), then you can check out the list changes history on the list page, click on the word popup for each word that you want, and quick add it.

MiFu   April 23rd, 2013 12:27a.m.

Wow!
My HSK 4 went from about 33% to 0% overnight! I use that list to work out how far I have come. My HSK 1, 2, and 3 have all also gone from 100% to about 80%. If it is just a case of the words being moved around in the lists then why can't the program recognise it and keep words I have learned as learned?
I use the lists to measure my progress. That update was really annoying. Will there be more? Are they frequent? Will I spend the next 6 months studying my way through HSK 4 and 5 only to have an update remove all signs of the progress? The data I get off Skritter is one of the things I find most useful about it!
How annoying!

CC   April 23rd, 2013 3:15a.m.

I just added words again, and it wasn't many for each list. I'm now back where I was, and it's fine.

But, I think a warning might have been useful. The main frustration seems to be that we didn't know it was going to happen, or how to rectify it.

So, can I ask that if it is going to happen again, we get a heads up?

Frank Pereny   April 23rd, 2013 1:10p.m.

I was just wondering on what basis was Evan updating the HSK lists.

Were these mistakes, changes to the HSK, updates in the new HSK test, or some combination of all 3?

derekwan   April 23rd, 2013 6:13p.m.

It seems that a lot of my words have been reset and come up as "New Readings/Writings".

Laspimon   April 24th, 2013 5:42a.m.

Nick, its going to take a lot of time to click through and re-add all the words manually, could you make a list containing all the words removed? Maybe my computer is old, or perhaps all my internets are just slow, but in my case "quick add" is not exactly quick, when you have to do it 80 times over.

Creating a "Words removed from the HSK5-list on Apr 23, 2013" would do the trick.

Alan   April 24th, 2013 12:53p.m.

If you want to see the difference, you could download the 2010 lists from here: http://lingomi.com/blog/hsk-lists-2010/ and paste them into this tool which shows where the words are now in the newest (2012) HSK lists: http://www.hskhsk.com/analyse.html - if you switch on 'suggest HSK words' it will show you the words that are new for 2012. You should check for new words at lower levels too.

Oh and by the way, you don't have to worry about re-adding the words one by one manually. The easiest way if you want to keep the old words around would be to create HSK 2010 lists and study both the 2010 and the 2012 lists. To re-add all the 2010 words, temporarily 'pause' all other lists and add as many characters as you are allowed until the lists are complete.

HAL   April 25th, 2013 7:52a.m.

So if the list is on the "to be added" metalist, it won't add the new words that were added to lessons you've already completed? Or if I've completed a word list and then the list is subsequently changed and new words are added, it won't add the new words in automatically?

Seems a pity; should be easy to fix, too.

nick   April 25th, 2013 1:33p.m.

I'll ask Evan to make a diff list so that you can more easily grab the words which were removed in the new version.

derekwan, can you give some examples of items you're totally sure you studied before but which are now coming up as new? This shouldn't be happening.

HAL, I'm not exactly sure what you're asking, so let me know if this doesn't answer you. When we add words to an existing list, any changes to sections before your current section will set you back to that other section so that you can get the new words. The list will temporarily think you're only that far through the list until you get the new words added into My Words while studying, and then it will scan through to find where you were previously.

So if you're doing HSK 2 and are on section 10, and we add a word to sections 5 and 15, then your apparent progress goes from ~67% to ~33%. When you go to study, the next time a word is added, it's added from section 5, and then your list scans ahead until you're back to section 10--and then your progress shows 67% again. But it doesn't add the word from section 5 until you actually get the next word added during study, because otherwise you might have a bunch of new words you're not ready for if we added a bunch of words to a list.

Evan   April 25th, 2013 6:48p.m.

I'm sorry about the lack of advance warning with the update! As Nick and other users have mentioned, your lowered progress levels are a temporary consequence of the update, and will return back to normal rather quickly.

Here is the list of removed words:

Laspimon   April 25th, 2013 11:17p.m.

Thank you for that.

junglegirl   April 26th, 2013 4:11a.m.

Thanks Evan. So, if I want to continue to get reviews of words that were removed, then I need to add the list you just linked to to the lists that I study. Is that right?

nick   April 26th, 2013 7:35p.m.

Yes, that's correct.

Derek Wan   April 27th, 2013 9:41a.m.

On mobile I can't even check my lists any more--it says something about an error connecting to server. But I basically had 100% completion on the Reading and Writing for levels 1 to 5. I was about 1/4 through level 6.

But look at my progress now http://imgur.com/Jg28gwu.jpg

But sure, next time I see something tagged as New, I'll jot it down.

lechuan   April 28th, 2013 9:23p.m.

Thank you for updating the new HSK lists. Are the updates complete? The description on the new hsk lists indicate that the are the 2009 versions.

Evan   April 29th, 2013 5:09p.m.

I'm going to try to finish up 5 and 6 around now, then I'll update the description.

swimming   May 7th, 2013 5:53p.m.

Evan, thanks for updating the lists. I seem to have a technical problem with the new HSK 5 list. I can't seem to finish it. I learned all the new words but skritter seems to cycle around it again and again in the hope of finding new words to add. The app seems to scan hundreds of words before giving up, and does it again and again. When I try to study the list on its own on the website, I get the message "Still looking for new words to add" for ever. Am I the only one experiencing this problem?

nick   May 8th, 2013 11:50p.m.

swimming, we've reproduced and will be checking into the bug that must be causing in the next week. Sorry about this!

lechuan   May 23rd, 2013 8:57p.m.

After all is said and done, will the new new HSK lists be much different than the ones alanmd has published? ie. http://www.skritter.com/vocab/list?list=283956215

nick   May 27th, 2013 5:45p.m.

The ordering is in order of Skritter's toughness ranking rather than in pinyin order, which will give a very different experience. The content should be the same.

lechuan   May 27th, 2013 6:01p.m.

Very cool. Thanks for the update!

lechuan   August 15th, 2013 6:13p.m.

How goes the HSK list updates?

lechuan   August 26th, 2013 5:15p.m.

Is work on the HSK lists complete, or still ongoing?

Evan   September 3rd, 2013 6:45p.m.

Lists 1-5 are done, and I'll get HSK 6 done tonight. I updated the lists during finals week, so by the time I got to six I had to stop and put it off to complete later. That being said, I didn't mean to forget about it, so I'm glad you asked about this!

Evan   September 3rd, 2013 10:48p.m.

Actually, I'm going to need a bit more time to get this done--but it will get done ASAP!

Evan   September 4th, 2013 7:06p.m.

It's done now. Just so you know, there's now 2505 words in the list for whatever reason. Be sure to let me know if you encounter any issues!

lechuan   September 4th, 2013 7:44p.m.

Thanks! Will the descriptions be updated to show they are based on the 2012 new HSK?

swimming   September 5th, 2013 2:03a.m.

If it is not too much effort, I think that it would also be useful to have short lists with the differences, i.e., a list of words that were added to to HSK 6 list, and a list of words that were removed. How many of these are there?

What would happen to words that were removed from the HSK 6? Would they stay in my studies?

Thanks again Evan!
