App constantly crashing

Talafar   July 26th, 2012 7:36a.m.

The IOS app is absolutely fantastic and I love it. But in the last few days it's been crashing like crazy.

Today it has crashed at least 10 times. I have an Itouch, but before this was never a problem - it ran fine.

Possible causes?

In the last few days I've done 2 new things:
1: Downloaded the extra sounds, after many failed attempts.
2: Started using a stylus

In the last 2 weeks I've also added a tonne of new words, as I'm on holiday and using this chance to study full time.

Could any of these 3 things be causing it? Anyone else getting a lot of crashes? Any tips?

Zeppa   July 26th, 2012 7:53a.m.

Yes, it keeps crashing for me too, on the iPod Touch. It's the newer version btw. I am thinking of reinstalling - have you tried that? I haven't added extra sounds but I have started using a stylus, if you think that's relevant.

Same here. It only started crashing on me once I turned on 3 test types and started adding 100 words a day (manual).

In the middle of a session, it exits to the home screen.

When I was only doing the writing tests, aiding about 20-40 characters per day, it did not crash. I had downloaded extra pronunciations from day one, so I don't think that is the main factor. I don't use a stylus.

Do you have any crash reports you can email us?

You might also want to try the temporary workaround of turning on "private account" in your settings and seeing if the crashing stops; that would indicate a known issue with a crash-reporting library we're using which ironically causes crashes.

Hi Nick, I emailed you a set of crash reports.

Zeppa   July 26th, 2012 12:07p.m.

I have emailed some. I haven't got that many because I am only doing about 15 minutes a day.

Talafar   July 26th, 2012 6:49p.m.

Emailed crash reports. Might try your suggestion Zeppa, and reinstall.

If doing 15 mins a day is fine, and assuming a little bit of independence between runs (should be fine resuming from last point even if you clear it in ram right, since it's stored server side?) then you could in the meantime counter the problem by running for ~15 mins, clearing it out of ram, and going right back in. Possibly anyways.

Has this been sorted out? I have still been doing 15 mins and it crashes two or three times per (5 min) session). I have an iPad now and it doesn't crash there. But it's the iPod Touch I want to use because I can carry it around in a pocket.

tianHaneul, I'm not sure what you mean. I close down the IOS app between sessions, as I read that that improves syncing. I no longer use the Web app for practising, i.e. have put my Wacom tablet aside and only add words and check progress online.

15 mins is short. I had too much other work to do. Including learning Chinese and Skritter, I spend over an hour. I don't quite understand people who do 60 hours skrittering a month. Does that include both people like me who do their learning of characters outside Skritter and only use Skritter to revise, or also people who have Skritter running for a long time but are not clicking through quickly, but instead thinking and practising (Sketchpad? haven't tried this out).

I only have a few characters in Skritter because I restarted. I probably know 1000 rather than 550. I want to make a drive to learn more, but if I spend a month doing that, the maximum I could imagine Skrittering would be 1 hour per day.

Btw I can live with this crashing - it sometimes repeats the last few cards when I restart it, but no harm in that.

The next version should be more stable. One thing you can try is turning on the private account setting in the account settings screen. That turns off a third party crash reporting system which seems to have caused some instability. It's off by default in the next version.
