Errors Here And There

scott   August 18th, 2011 4:38p.m.

With the new list system and overhauled word popup just released, there are a handful of bugs floating around that slipped through. I'm fixing them as they come in, and by the weekend the vast majority of lingering bugs should be gone. And if you see something amiss, let me know at scott at skritter.com or post it on this topic and I'll address it right away.

If you're curious about the new features check out last month's newsletter:

More info to come on the blog! As soon as I stop frantically smashing every bug that emerges :)

What happened to the words that were in the Queue before the change?

wispfrog   August 18th, 2011 5:21p.m.

Mine seem to be completely invisible, but still available to get added as study goes on.

Also, adding a word to the Miscellaneous list via the fancy new info popup doesn't seem to have visibly re-enabled it for adding again. (Having been disabled because end was reached by adding when it was empty)

swimming   August 18th, 2011 5:46p.m.

The changes are really nice. Thanks for working hard on improving the site. Here is one more suggestion that should be trivial to implement.

In the fancy new info popup, it would be nice
to have different colors for the check sign signifying "This word is in your studies" and the plus sign signifying "This word is not in your studies; click to add it to a list". Currently, they are both green and it is hard to tell them apart.

scott   August 18th, 2011 6:04p.m.

The queue has been removed, and I'm going to be running a script in the near future that will take all the words in your queue and put them into a separate list for you. In the meantime, yes you can still add from the queue, you can just no longer add to it.

Ah, thanks for the bug report wispfrog. Looks like this only happens the first time the list is auto-generated. I've reset your list for you; it should be fine now. If anyone else is having this problem simply reset the list from the beginning by saving the list study settings (open the popup on the list page) or just let me know if it's not restarting as it should.

scott   August 18th, 2011 6:08p.m.

Thanks for your comments, swimming! And that's a good point, I'll confer with Nick and George and we'll see if we can tweak that color. Before it was very easy to see with red/green wasn't it?

george   August 18th, 2011 9:41p.m.

Yeah, I actually designed the colors Swimming, and I'm not 100% pleased with them either. We'll discuss some options and see if we can't come up with something that is easier to grok quickly and intuitively.

I have a couple of questions:

1. On the main study page, there is now a symbol between the star and the magnifying glass. Is that for banning words? The other symbols all have a tooltip that pops up, but the new one doesn't.

2. I was looking through the new word popup and found a word that I want to add. It automatically is set to add to the Miscellaneous list in a new section that is today's date. Should I keep adding sections for each new day that I add a word, or should I just make a default "Random words" section so that list doesn't get filled with too many small sections?

By the way, today was the first day that I've skrittered in a while (school starting), and it was a nice surprise to see all of the cool changes. I really like the "characters containing..." feature and the option to search for more "words containing..." As always, you guys keep making an already fantastic tool even better. Thanks a ton!

scott   August 19th, 2011 8:02a.m.

@JimAndress:

1. Yes, that symbol is for banning the word you're currently studying. I'll add a tooltip, thanks for pointing that out!

2. By default we have new words added to the last section if it was made that day, or make a new last section if it wasn't. In this way if you simply build the misc list the way things are set up now, you automatically have all your misc words sorted by when you added them. This could lead to a lot of small sections, or it might not, it depends on your adding style. Either way, it will take a while to fill up the list with sections; the limit is currently 500 sections per list. What do you think, is this behavior helpful?

And glad you like the improvements! A very timely time to rejoin just when the new features all go up.

@scott Great work, I'm very happy to see that the Queue is finally (almost) gone.

The new popup looks very good, and it's nice to see more example words. I agree with swimming that the colors are confusing. Also, when we added words from the popup before, it was one click; now it's click the plus sign, click OK, then click OK (assuming you accept all defaults) which I think is a click or two too many. Maybe the "Word added" popup could be done away with?

James

scott   August 19th, 2011 10:33a.m.

Thanks James! Yeah that's a good point, I can get rid of that last extra click and simply have the word popup close itself once the word has been added.

What do you think, is it worth the extra click to be able to add the word to any given section or list if the desire arises? Or would it be better to just add those clicked words directly to your Misc list?

swimming   August 19th, 2011 10:47a.m.

I like the option of adding a word to any given section or list. I think it is worth another click.
On the other hand, as jww1066 suggests, the "Word added" popup can just be replaced by updating the word popup window. After adding a word, it still says
"Status: Not added" in the popup window.

Byzanti   August 19th, 2011 11:13a.m.

I sent you an email Scott, but my queue hasn't migrated to a list...

Thanks!

jww1066   August 20th, 2011 5:36p.m.

@scott yeah, I like the ability to add words to lists from the popup, that makes it convenient if you use more than one list in place of the old Queue.

scott   August 20th, 2011 9:43p.m.

Ah yes, I should fix that with the word popup, as you describe, swimming. Will get that done.

And Byzanti, sorry for the delay. I got your list built now and you should be all set. Except that I had to use the old code to build it, so you along with everyone else will get an updated version in the near future.
