feature request: reminder of what words a character is in

Kai Carver   May 30th, 2011 5:09a.m.

Hi,

When I learn or review a character, I'd like a reminder of what common words the character is in.

Example: I'm reviewing 表, I see the pinyin, the definition, an example sentence, maybe a mnemonic, and the composing radicals, but I'd also like a list of common words to quickly remind me how the character is used: 手表,代表,表示
It could look like this:
http://screencast.com/t/QvSwULAJSju4

Just the characters would be enough, with more info available on hover, like for the example sentence.

I know I can see the common words by clicking on the magnifying glass, but the info is sufficently important (and compact) that I'd like to see it every time, as a study aid.

"表? ah, 手表de 表!"

I so much agree to this. I desperately need this as well.

Agree it would be really helpful.

Maybe, except that different people would have different words they wanted.
You could always add the ones you like to your definitions.
Perhaps it could be set up like the mnemonics, where people add lists and other people can choose them.
I like to add the words to my list when I add new characters, so they crop up quite close together.

I do what Rachael does. If I need something, I'll add it to the definition :p.

I'm also making tea eggs for the first time at the moment.

I hope I haven't added too much salt...

@rgwatwormhill different people might want to have different words, but Skritter already selects 4 words for every character.
Example for 表:
http://www.skritter.com/vocab/wordpopup?vocabKey=zh-%E8%A1%A8-0

I'd prefer not to have to click on the magnifying glass to see that list. I also often add a word or two to my list, sometimes from an MDBG lookup, but more often from the list Skritter provides.

By the way, there seems to be a Skritter bug causing duplicates in word lists. In the case of 表, "代表 dàibiǎo: represent; to delegate; representative" appears twice.

It's on my to-do list to try this out. I'm thinking it will be really helpful, as well.

Kai, the duplicate words are in there because 表 has two traditional variants (one of which is also 表) and 代表 uses 表. In this case it would be smarter not to list the second one when studying simplified and traditional, because they are the same in both styles, but we don't have all that logic in there yet.
