[Feature Request] RTH++ = EZChinesey

Phoboss   February 25th, 2011 4:48a.m.

Dear Skritter Team,
you offer the special feature "Use Heisig Words" which is awesome!
But, actually, there is a much better book, which is called "Learn & Remember 2178 Characters and their meanings". It's layers on RTH but have 1. more characters and 2. has improved Heisig's method.
It's written by Ph.D. Alan Hoenig.

I would be very kind of you to offer a feature like "Use Hoenig Words".

If you say that you are overloaded with work then I hereby offer my support for creating such word list.

The books website: http://ezchinesey.com/

Thank you!

The Heisig words we got in there via a dirty hack, and even that hack was a bunch of work. It wasn't making the keyword lists, it was setting them up everywhere and making the options and a bunch of other miscellaneous things it turned out we needed to do.

So many fewer people use the Hoenig system that I wonder if it's worthwhile. How many would be interested? We do have the textbook in the system.

@Phoboss when I clicked on the link to see an excerpt, I got this:

http://host272.hostmonster.com/suspended.page/disabled.cgi/easychinesey.us

Doesn't exactly inspire confidence.

@jww1066
Hmm, that's strange. I tried to open the link and it worked (@Europe).
BTW: It's not easychinesey.us but ezchinesey.com.

@nick
OK, no problem. It's too complicated to implement it and unfortunately there are too few interested in it.

jww1066   February 25th, 2011 4:37p.m.

@Phoboss I am referring not to the main page, but to the page that shows up when you click on "Click to Download a free excerpt of this book". It takes you to http://ezchinesey.com/?page_id=15 and the link on that page is broken. There are also a couple of broken image links on that page. It's not that the quality of the web page necessarily has anything to do with the quality of the book, but it just looks kind of unprofessional.

Phoboss   February 25th, 2011 5:19p.m.

OK, you're right. Indeed, above-mentioned link doesn't work.
But following link for the excerpt works:
http://ezchinesey.com/stuff/ChiMeaningsExcerpt.pdf

Aha, thanks.

Thanks for sharing, @Phoboss. I wish I would have had Heisig or Hoenig back in 2005 when I started learning Chinese characters! zhongwen.com's folk etymology has worked just fine for me, however.

I've got to say, though, I am not at all a fan of the name "ezchinesey."
