Editing definitions as you add words to a list

Lawnmower16   April 29th, 2011 1:29p.m.

I was wondering if there is any way to change the definition right when you put a word on a list. Sometimes I'll input a word, press enter, and the definition will be completely wrong, or once it was in a different language entirely. But there is no way to change it from there. If you say, "add new word," it won't let you add the same word as one that already exists. The "edit" button just brings you back to the Japanese word input.

So, is there no way to change the definition right then and there, so you're not confused/misinformed when the word actually comes up to learn later?

Once you save the words added you should be able to click on the characters to change the definition and other stuff.

The editor is one of the most complicated bits of code and user interface on the site, second only to the study page itself, so we decided not to have the popup available when editing as part of the general effort to keep it as simple a tool as possible, while still being efficient to use. Byzanti is correct, once you've saved the list, that's the time to go and edit the definition to your liking, or when it shows up for practice. Though if it shows up in the wrong language, be sure to mark it as a correction when you enter in the correct definition!

Ok thanks! I know exactly what you're talking about. I don't think I've ever tried that.

I hope you get the queue changes finished soon. Adding words through the queue would still have this problem if you have a huge queue, since you have to click next, one 10 item page at a time, until you get to the last ones that you just added.

My own opinion - I'd like to be able to edit the definition when adding words, particularly when adding to my queue, since it can take a long time to navigate to the end of the queue. It could be a little optional button when the word is added in or something, fairly inconspicuous, though it might be rather technically difficult to implement (I wouldn't know anything about that). The other thing, which I've mentioned before, is that I would really like custom definitions tied to an individual list, though making those gel with standard definitions or other custom definitions might be a bit of a pain.

The focus on simplicity that seems to define a lot of Skritter's development and design is pretty good, but it's worth considering that oversimplification of the basic tools sometimes overcomplicates certain functionality.

Anyway, I feel like I haven't said this much for a while, but I think Skritter is already terrific, so don't take my idea of constructive suggestions in the wrong way, just something to put up on the white board for consideration as Skritter moves forward.
