Looks like the Great Firewall or something like it is preventing you from completely loading www.skritter.com because it is hosted on Google App Engine, which is periodically blocked. Try instead our mirror:

legacy.skritter.cn

This might also be caused by an internet filter, such as SafeEyes. If you have such a filter installed, try adding appspot.com to the list of allowed domains.

The practice page wont load.

YouJing   December 9th, 2010 10:06a.m.

I can't access the practice page. I tried both .cn and .com.
I also tried with my VPN enabled and I tried disabling alpha features.

Still not working :(

YouJing   December 9th, 2010 10:08a.m.

Clarification, the page where you actually practise wont load. The page where you choose what to practice loads fine.

bobbyd   December 9th, 2010 10:49a.m.

I was having a similar problem with that today. If you type in www.skritter.cn instead of .com it should work.

scott   December 9th, 2010 11:59a.m.

When you say it won't load, do you mean that it just shows a white, blank page? Or that the page loads but the flash doesn't? Or that the flash loads but it never displays a prompt? I tried your account from here and was able to get it to load for studying everything and for studying Short Term Spoken Chinese 5, so I don't think it's anything in the backend at least.

YouJing   December 9th, 2010 12:15p.m.

The page loads, but no flash, inside is just white. Seems like it might be a problem with firefox. It worked on my girlfrinds computer when using safari (but not with firefox). And now it seems to be working with Chrome and Explorer.

nick   December 9th, 2010 1:09p.m.

Did you see any JavaScript errors? (Ctrl+Shift+J in Firefox to check the error console--open it, then refresh to look for errors.)

Can you access this URL?
http://www.skritter.cn/swfs/skritter+7.346795244364182942.swf

laurenziano   December 9th, 2010 4:13p.m.

I'm using Firefox, and I had the same problem of the the blank frame in the "study" page.

The error console shows not true errors, but a long list of warnings... actually, after refreshing (following the procedure Nick has pointed out) the "study" page works fine again...

Another way is to turn off the Alpha Features, and the "practice" page is still working fine as ever.

laurenziano   December 9th, 2010 4:17p.m.

... but every time you load the "practice" page you have to to repeat the procedure... it looks like a bug for Firefiox users...

laurenziano   December 9th, 2010 4:18p.m.

I mean the "study" page, with Alpha Features on...

YouJing   December 9th, 2010 8:23p.m.

I can not access that url, not even with Chrome.

I too got a lot of warnings.

franco111222   December 9th, 2010 10:36p.m.

I am blocked too

franco111222   December 9th, 2010 10:40p.m.

www.skritter.cn seems to work fine

Nicki   December 9th, 2010 10:42p.m.

I saw somewhere that google apps is inaccessible in China right now...

jlm2jlm2   December 10th, 2010 7:21p.m.

This time my evening sesion has been very frustrating with many many:

"Failed to load resource: the server responded with a status of 404 (Not Found)"

and only green dots and I am not in China.

I do not know but something is not going fine.

nick   December 10th, 2010 7:36p.m.

Failed to load resource: the server responded with a status of 404 (Not Found) is not usually a big deal; that refers to the client looking for audio files for words you're learning, some of which don't exist.

Our serving seems okay at the moment according to logs, jlm2jlm2--what kind of response times are you getting (from the latency indicator pill next to the feedback tab on the practice page, in the lower right) while this is happening?

nick   December 10th, 2010 7:42p.m.

YouJing, if you can't access that URL, I don't know what to tell you. There's something weird going on, probably with the Great Firewall or related piece of restriction machinery. But it's not blocked in general right now, at least not from the four test locations in China available on the tool I use. I'll add some days to your subscription. Hope it clears up!

jlm2jlm2   December 10th, 2010 8:05p.m.

Hi Nick,
I do not remenber the latency I'm sorry, but the page practice looks like freezes and I only can see the green dots for minutes and minutes and nothing happens, at the end the only way to "fix" is reloading the page wasting time, characters and words; unfortunatelly after a short time working fine it hapens again.

nick   December 10th, 2010 8:24p.m.

It seems like it's a connection issue somewhere between us and you. The latency indicator would be a good help in debugging, so if you can take a look at that from time to time to get a sense of what it reads, it might help solve this.

jlm2jlm2   December 11th, 2010 1:43p.m.

Hi Nick,

The latency indicator shows when it happens: Connection idle (no recent comunication with server) and of course near 30 messages:Failed to load resource: the server responded with a status of 404 (Not Found)in Consola JavaScript.

nick   December 11th, 2010 2:12p.m.

Please try installing the debug Flash player (the plugin content debugger for Netscape-compatible browsers):
http://www.adobe.com/support/flashplayer/downloads.html

Then restart Chrome and see if you get this again--it might help me figure out if Flash is giving up for some reason.

jlm2jlm2   December 11th, 2010 3:38p.m.

The debug do not fixed it, happens again.

Win 7 64 bits
Chrome 9.0.597.15
Flash player 10.1.103.22

nick   December 11th, 2010 3:53p.m.

Does it happen while you're just reviewing, or only when you are adding words? (Try turning adding to manual and just reviewing for a while to see if it keeps happening.)

Do you see problems when loading other pages on the Skritter site, or just the green dots on the practice page?

jlm2jlm2   December 11th, 2010 4:17p.m.

Sorry to bother you in Saturday Nick.

it happens in both cases and only with the practice page.

Sometimes I have ..... status of 403 (Forbiddem) among many .... status of 404 (Not found).

nick   December 11th, 2010 5:31p.m.

What URLs are these on? I was assuming they'd just be on /sounds...

jww1066   December 11th, 2010 6:48p.m.

I get them on URLs like this:

s3.amazonaws.com/chinesepod.com/glossary/you3xie1.mp3Failed to load resource: the server responded with a status of 403 (Forbidden)

jlm2jlm2   December 11th, 2010 7:26p.m.

URL? I am all the time inside the URL from Skritter.

403 shows nong2ming2.mp3, zhang1zi3.mp3, ....
404 dont show nothing just the error.
