(Wacom) Tablet upgrade

notfromhere   January 20th, 2015 7:24a.m.

Hi guys,

I have been using a Wacom Bamboo for about a year now. I bought it, being the cheapest recommended one at the time, to see if this would work for me. It does, but I do have minor concerns with the response and sensitivity - it just doesn't feel natural.

So I'm wondering what one gains by getting a more expensive tablet? Reading through the features and specs of some of the newer ones, I can see them being a must for other applications, but not really for just writing characters.

Can anyone comment on this? Is it worth getting a more expensive tablet just for Skritter? If it is, how will it affect my experience using it?

Thanks

I can't imagine a more expensive Wacom tablet being more responsive than the Bamboo you are using, unless of course the pad has somehow become less responsive as you've used it. I think the cheaper ones work great and there's no reason to get a more expensive pad, (unless you would like to take advantage of the additional features for other applications like you mentioned).

It's possible you could tweak your settings so that it's more responsive: http://www.skritter.com/wacoms/settings

Thanks Jeremy, I suspected as much. I have consulted the above link a few times before - I don't think settings is an issue.

It's difficult to tell if the tablet's response has deteriorated, since it would have been very gradual. My best working theory is I started using the tablet when I wasn't using pen and paper, ever. Recently I've not used the tablet for a few months, but I have in the meantime started writing good old pen & paper (unrelated to my Chinese studies) and I suspect that might have raised my expectations somewhat.

I am somewhat intrigued by the tablets that have a screen as a surface - I like the idea of seeing what I'm writing where I'm writing it. But they cost way more than I can justify spending just for this.

Thanks
