Characters in words

Hi, in the App, in the settings menu, under vocab, there's an option called "Characters in words", that you can flick on and off? What does it do? What's the difference between whether it's on or off? I can't seem to find anything written about it in the documentation.

I assume if you have a word like 森林 and you have turned this setting on, Skritter will also add its two characters 森 and 林 to your study list.
