adding items directly to queue

Bohan   May 31st, 2011 8:53p.m.

every once in a while, I'll come across a word and I'll want to put into my Skritter account so that I don't forget about it, but I don't want to make a new list or anything like that.

I just went to "vocab lists", and then clicked on "queue", and added a word. I assume that by doing this, at some point that word will show up in my review queue, but I'm curious how long it will take for that to happen. I went to "my words" and searched the word using the search bar, and it came up, but it doesn't say what the tentative date is for it to show up in my review queue.

Can someone shed some light on this ?

I'm assuming you can modulate the speed the words are added from your queue by using the study settings here: http://www.skritter.cn/account/settings-study

In the "Add Word Frequency," I have "Fast" selected. Words from my queue are added pretty quickly; I think it's because I have this selected.

Bohan   May 31st, 2011 11:33p.m.

but I think if I do that, then every time I add a new list of words and study them, my review queue session will be studying pretty much all the same words all over again.

Byzanti   June 1st, 2011 4:41a.m.

Words you add to the queue aren't there forever (like lists are). Words are added from the queue to your study over time (and once added they disappear from the queue itself).

I don't really understand what you mean by the last bit...

atdlouis   June 1st, 2011 9:08a.m.

Yeah I don't understand what you mean Bohan. You should try adding a few words to your queue, study, and then watch them disappear.

They are moved from your queue list to your "My Words" list for study.

What do you mean by "review queue session"?

Bohan   June 1st, 2011 7:10p.m.

thanks for your replies, everyone.

Well, what happened was I added some words to my "queue" , by going to "vocab lists" and then clicking on "queue" underneath "made by me". Then I added the words, and waited a few days but they just sat there. I thought about changing my settings to add items "fast", but I had it like this before and my queue would fill up way too quickly, and I would be overwhelmed.

I found another way that seems to be much more convenient. I added the 4/5 new words to Scratchpad, with "tracking on", and then went through the words, and then saw that those 4/5 new words had dissapeared from where they were sitting in the "queue" list. This way seems to better suit me

I've not understood all of what you said, but I'd like to add a few points.

1. If you add things via the scratchpad, do they ever get into your "my words" list? I thought they didn't.

2. Recently, I've been using just my queue, (with all lists switched off), and things appear stricly in the order I add them. How long this takes depends only on the length of my queue - I was on a time lag of weeks for a while because I had added so many (hundreds).

3. I would like to know how Skritter chooses which words to introduce next. So, if I have two lists active, and I put words in my queue as well (using the MDBG link), which ones get priority? I had thought that words in Lists got added to the Queue and then arrived for study from there, but I'm not sure that's correct. Even if it is, how does Skritter decide when to move things from List to Queue?

4. I would really like a facility to add certain words to the front of my Queue instead of the back. If that's not possible, then a way to rearrange the order of things within the Queue would be useful.

Rachael.

Hey, many, many thanks, Bohan!

I re-read all of these posts to see if it made any more sense, and realised that you said to put Tracking On in the scratchpad. (I've always used it off because I mostly use scratchpad for my children to practice on). When I do that, it adds the items to My Words immediately, which is exactly the feature I wanted (see note 4 above).

Thanks again.

How long is your Queue?
If it's long, then that's why your words aren't appearing.
If it is short, could you try switching all your lists OFF for a few minutes, and either waiting for automatic adding to shift your queue into "my words", or use the little plus button to add them manually.

(I assume you know that there is a smallish buffer of words about to be added to "my words", so you'll have to clear those before the new "queue" words appear. Less than 10 I think.)

Note to Nick:

In My Words - Tools - My Words the description says "words added from my 5 lists", whereas I'm pretty sure it also includes words added via the Queue and the Scratchpad.

Bohan,

when you use the Search bar in My Words, it only searches through the words that you are already studying. It doesn't find things in the Lists or the Queue that you are planning to study (I just tested both of these).

Do you think you might have been trying to add a word that you actually already had?

Byzanti   June 2nd, 2011 11:54a.m.

Rachael, stuff that is in the queue definitely does show up searching My Words.

Also, as for your question on how they're added, if you have one active list and also the queue, then it'll add one from one, then one from the other. I think if you have two lists, then you get one from each of the lists and then one from the queue, but I'm not certain about that.

As for other upgrades to the queue, they're rehauling it and integrating it in with the list system. I don't think they want to do any other work on it meanwhile (shame, a 'go to end' button would be really really helpful :p).

I also just add stuff to the queue, and don't do lists!

To Byzantai,

Sorry, my error, I must have mistyped some pinyin.

Thanks for the info on how Skritter chooses words.

Rachael.
