Zhongwen Chrome extension in German and French

chris_zhongwen   April 25th, 2011 4:22p.m.

The Zhongwen Chrome extension, which provides an easy to use Chinese popup dictionary, is now available in German and in French.

Both new versions support adding words to your Skritter queue, just as the English version does.

The German version is based on HanDeDict with about 150,000 entries. The French version uses CFDICT with more than 100,000 entries.

German version: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/jjkbnbgakjgfiajfkifdbhbfmjgmddeh

French version:

Original English version:
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/kkmlkkjojmombglmlpbpapmhcaljjkde

You can install more than one of the above versions (they use different icons), just remember to only turn on one at a time.

Is there any chance that the extension could have a toggle switch to set www.skritter.cn rather than www.skritter.com for the 's' shortcut? The .com address has been down in China for a while now - it still gets the words through (most of the time), but it's really annoying to get the "Skritter.com is down" page every time I add a word...

@FatDragon: Thanks for pointing out this problem. I'm going to add a switch on the options page of the extension that will allow you to choose skritter.cn instead of skritter.com.

Thanks a ton, that's exactly what I was hoping for.

As I said in the comments:

Request: Please add 百度百科 as another Alt-[.] shortcut. It's an extraordinarily extensive resource for 成語, 方言, 口語 and it also works as a great dictionary for advanced learners.

chris_zhongwen   April 26th, 2011 3:42p.m.

@K书窝: Could you post some sample links? I thought 百度百科 was some kind of encyclopedia rather than a dictionary. Do they offer English explanations/translations?

Or did you mean 百度词典?

Thanks.

Foo Choo Choon   April 26th, 2011 6:11p.m.

Thanks for your reply. I'm referring to 百度百科. The entries themselves are typically Chinese-Chinese, often with some English in it as well. Whether they are 字典-like (often very good for single characters), 词典-like, or 百科-like depends on the type of the entry looked at. There is a lot of overlapping between encyclopaedic and dictionary-like entries, which I see as a major strength (=> more than just another dictionary).
At the bottom of the page there is usually also a Chinese-English entry obtained from 百度词典.

Some examples of what I mean:

锤炼: http://baike.baidu.com/view/905976.htm
土包子: http://baike.baidu.com/view/280036.htm
七嘴八舌: http://baike.baidu.com/view/370363.htm
想入非非: http://baike.baidu.com/view/85277.htm
荼: http://baike.baidu.com/view/369395.htm

Addendum: It's also useful to do some comparison on slightly less common characters:

e.g. 麋 (just some arbitrary character):

NCIKU: http://www.nciku.com/search/zh/detail/麋/27215
MDBG: http://www.mdbg.net/chindict/chindict.php?page=worddict&wdrst=0&wdqb=麋
iciba: http://www.iciba.com/麋
Baike: http://baike.baidu.com/view/1052686.htm
(In this case a lot comes from http://www.chazidian.com as well)

Endlich auch auf Deutsch :)

FatDragon   May 2nd, 2011 5:38a.m.

Sorry to mention this again, not sure if it's on a to-do list or just got lost in the shuffle of everyday life...

Any word on the switch to divert "add to Skritter" to www.skritter.cn?

Anyway, thanks for the hard work on putting this together and maintaining it - I use it all the time and it's helpful 要命. Now if only I could find its equivalent for non-browser activities - i.e. QQ and Word docs, I would be in good shape. I did find a program that purported to do exactly that at one point, actually, but it never seemed to work for me... Lingoes maybe?

Phoboss, be careful with HanDeDict. I use it in Pleco and it is also the basis for the Skritter German version. It is full of mistakes and wrong translations. I always check with an additional dictionary. For Skritter, some people including myself, have done some thousands of corrections, so Skritter German is now - from my point of view - usable, the original HanDeDict only partially.

@FatDragon: Sorry, I didn't get around to making a new release yet. The feature should go live within the next couple of days.
