More statistics?

Nystrom   June 1st, 2011 3:37a.m.

This is my first post since I started to Skritter. Been using it for two months and I love it! Probably learnt more characters now then I did during a year and a half in China:-)

I really find that having a lot of statistics that show how I am doing boosts my motivation. Skritter does have some nice statistics but I would appreciate if it there were even more. But maybe it's only me:P

If you have used the plug-in "Hanzi statistics" for Anki it shows how many characters you know according to HSK level as well as Frequency. Could be good to see if missed learning some basic characters for instance.

It would also be nice if you could get graphs of projections of future learning. I have done this for myself in a excel sheet. Excellent for motivation.

What statistics would you like to see? or are the current ones sufficient?

Would this be hard to implement?

I agree, but the Skritter guys shouldn't be responsible for developing and tweaking all the different graphs and statistics, as there are simply too many possible ways that people will want to slice and dice the data. Instead, if they could offer a way for us to export our raw statistics, the programmers among us could handle calculating the statistics.

You say "I have done this myself in an excel sheet". Would you mind sharing the details of how you're calculating your future learning projections?

I would like the ability to extract the statistics, then it's up to me to 'play' with the numbers however I want. The numbers I would want would be totals for each of the four categories (characters, words, definitions and pinyin) and time studied for each day. I know I could go back and write down each number one by one, but when I have been on the site for over a year, I'd rather spend the time working on my Skritter than the numbers :)

It's true that there are many possibilities for how to manipulate data so for the projection stuff that would be nice to get the raw data. But something like the Anki's Hanzi statistics would be really nice, since I would have no idea how to do that by myself even if I had the data (sure it's possible though).

My future projections are nothing fancy. Just added a trend line to my scatter plot. I use the linear and logarithmic ones.

That is what I am doing now, writing down after every session. I will probably get third of that eventually though. As you say it would be better if I spent the time skrittering:P

I just wrote a script that outputs stats similar to what HappyBlue is talking about. If there is interest, I can quickly hook that up to a URL so that you can get a CSV dump in your email of how much time you spent and how much you learned each day. Then you could graph in Excel. Or if there's not a lot of interest, I could just run it for you as a one-time thing instead of hooking it up to a URL.

I think we are too busy to do the more detailed statistics you describe any time soon, but I think with that and with the word export feature, you'd have the data we have about what you know, and if someone wanted to build a quick tool like Hanzi Statistics for analyzing the data, she'd have what she needed.

@Nick yes, please, if it's convenient a URL for getting that data would be great.

@nick yup I'd enjoy having a look at that data too!

clicking on that link doesn't seem to do much.

it displays a page that says:

"Okay, that progress email should send shortly."

but I don't get an email. I tried a few days ago and today, checked my spam, but nothing shows up, except "Christina Aguilera undressed", but presumably that's not it.

I made a fix to it, but now I'm realizing that this request takes too much memory to survive. So go ahead and try it again, but if it doesn't work, I'll send you a manual copy and be done with it--I need to remove this URL soon.

ah ok, thanks Nick, I got it
