How to edit a definition or pronunciation?

vlx   December 30th, 2014 10:46p.m.

There are several words I added, such as 上空, 原定, 爪哇海 and 档案文件 that I've been editing over and over to change the pronunciation or definition but it never saves it after I edit it. As soon as I type my changes and I press enter, it shows the old thing. Then I save the list anyway, hoping it'll update but it stays the same. I've tried entering and exiting Skritter and many other things to get it to save the edits but it doesn't. Is something that Skritter tech people will look at and change later if they think my edit is right? Btw, I've been trying to edit words only using iPad air. I had great success adding completely new words that Skritter didn't have before but editing existing or saved words just won't work no matter what I do.

Hi vlx,

Thanks for your question. Vocab item definitions can't be changed in the list editor so we're sorry about any confusion this might have been causing. Editing in this area is to ensure that the appropriate character(s) are selected when creating or editing a list. If you're looking to make custom definitions for your words you have two options you can use.

The first is to edit vocabulary as it appears in the word queue while you're studying. Do this by clicking on pencil icon for any definition you want to change. If we've got an error in our definition please share the correction! If you just want to add extra notes or edit the existing definition just save it for personal use.

The second option is to visit the My Words section of the Skritter site and look up any words you'd like to change and do them all at once. Personally, I like to "Star" words during a study session (on the info screen in the iOS app) so that I can search for stared items and make changes quickly from the My Words page. Again, just select the word in question, find the pencil icon and make any changes you'd like.

Pinyin corrections are a little different as our system only supports one pronunciation for a multi-character words. If you think something on our system was submitted in error, please use the "Send Feedback on ___" button on the iOS info screen letting us know of the pronunciation issue so we can sort it out. If you'd like to add a secondary pronunciation to a multi-character word just add a note in the definition field, example: 想法: "xiang3fa5" - "idea; way of thinking; opinion; (-fǎ: think of a way)"

Hope that helps answer your questions! Please email skritter@skritter.com with any other questions and we'll try to help in any way that we can.

Best,
Jake and The Skritter Team
